Now What?! Part 1

All you have to do is pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV to see evidence of the uncertain times we are living in. You can have a conversation with just about anyone and most will tell you they are not secure in their job and are concerned about their future. We’ve seen prices rise and stocks fall. Gas goes from overpriced to unavailable. We are at war defending our freedom and security continues to be a top priority. As the presidential election comes to a close, no matter the outcome, the winner will be faced with the enormous job of putting our nation back together as well as tackling big issues on economy, security, education and health care.

So many problems cause frustrations and fears leaving people asking, “Now What?!” Christians are not immune to the effects and challenges of daily living. God never promised us a life of bliss in this world. In fact, Paul preaches on suffering and how no matter our circumstances, we should cling to our joy and our faith. How is your joy holding up these days? Are you ready to face the challenges of daily life or are you ready to give up? Where do you turn when all else fails? As Christians, we should turn to our faith in all times, good and bad. We should give glory for success and our trust when we fail. The truth is it doesn’t matter who is president. What matters is who is King of your life.
Jesus knows troubles and trials. He spent time living in conditions well under our present day comfort zone. He lived by the charity of others which He inspired. His followers gave up homes and lives to spread the gospel. He knew pain and frustration just like He knew hunger and thirst. He walked on the earth so that He would be the ultimate teacher on how to live a godly life.

This teaching series will be a challenging one. We invite you to examine your life and the role of faith and church. Look at not where you are, but where you are going. How do you face problems in your family, at work and in yourself? What conflicts are you facing? What gives you joy? Is it security, safety, possessions, prosperity, or achievements? Those are man-made milestones. Only Jesus can give us real security, peace and joy. He equipped Christians with tools of encouragement, faith, and love so that we can fight back against the darkness. He calls us to be our very best when the world is at its very worst.

We’ll examine three areas of Jesus’ life where He was challenged. The feeding of the 5000 demonstrates how He met overwhelming need, which began with the generosity of one person. In the wilderness Jesus defeated temptation. Before He could reveal himself to the disciples and walk on water, Jesus led them into a storm. In the end, Jesus teaches these great lessons about how to rise above circumstances and to cling to salvation and faith.

As a church, we can face the problems together and seek out opportunities to lift each other above chaos. We can give more and do more if we work together. We can be an example to our family, friends, our community and to the world. Cling to the promises of Jesus and hang on. We’ve got a lot of work to do. Find out how you can Build a B.I.G. On July 6th, the community is invited to join Peachtree City Christian Church in welcoming Coach Bobby Bowden to speak at the 10:45am and 11:00am worship services. Bowden’s visit is part of the church activities during the B.I.G. 4th of July Weekend Celebration. Other activities include a picnic fireworks at Pebble Pocket Pool and participation in the PTC Parade.

A living legend in college football, Bowden boasts more wins than any other coach in major college football history, along with a distinguished reputation among both those he coaches and those he coaches against. Bowden’s players have been recognized with some of the biggest awards in football as well, ranging from ACC All-American awards to Heisman winners, showing that Bowden is not only dedicated to excellence on the football field, but off of it as well. He has coached for 42 years, 32 of them at Florida State University, and holds a lifetime coaching record of 366-113-4. He led the Seminoles to fourteen consecutive Bowl games, the second longest streak in college football.

Of all his impressive accolades, some of Bowden’s most notable come from far outside the football world. Bowden is universally recognized as a man of great character, deeply rooted in family, and devoted to his faith. He frequently speaks to different groups and churches, particularly in the South about topics ranging from adversity to character.

Introducing People to Jesus.

Some people consider meeting a celebrity a big deal. Millions of people eagerly read tabloids or watch entertainment news hoping to capture some insight into the personal lives of the “stars.” But these lives are not always shinning examples of how we should live. In fact, the celebrities that get the most attention are usually the worst examples. But people continue to tune in anyway and seem eager to see their destruction. What is it that attracts society to watch these train wrecks? Wouldn’t it be nice if all the good deeds made the headlines? I know good examples are out there. We just have to look for them. As Christians, our best example of how to live comes from Jesus. Imagine if you could meet Jesus! What would it be like?

Our B.I.G. Mission at PTC3 is to “Build relationships, Introduce people to Jesus, and Grow disciples.” In this series we will be revisiting our B.I.G. Mission and focusing on what it means to “Introduce people to Jesus.” Before Jesus left earth and ascended into Heaven, He left us with instructions to Go! and introduce people to Him. We refer to that as the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20).

We will be studying how Jesus told us to “Go!” Most people are familiar with the Great Commission in Mt. 28, but there are at least four variations of the commission to the church throughout the Gospels and Acts (Mk. 16:14-18; Lk. 24:44-49; Jn. 20:19-23; Acts 1:4-8). We will share how and where Jesus wants us to go by looking at the commission that He gave to His disciples to be “witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8), and talking about the “Jerusalems,” “Judeas and Samarias,” and “the ends of the earth” in our lives.

In the book of Acts, Luke provides a more detailed narrative of the ascension of Jesus (Acts 1:6-11) than he did in his gospel (Lk. 24:50-53). After Jesus ascended into the heavens, the apostles stood on the Mt. of Olives “looking intently up into the sky” (v. 10). Because they just stood there gawking, an angel appears to them and says, “Why do you stand here looking into the sky?” (v. 11) Rather than going out into the world and being fishers of men, they stood there staring into the heavens, wide eyed, and opened–mouthed like dead fish!

Now, if we witnessed such an amazing event, we’d probably stop and stare too. But as the church, Christ has commissioned us to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Mt. 28:19-20). The question is, “Are we going? Or are we just standing there gawking?”

The way the world is introduced to Jesus is by meeting the church, or meeting a Christian. Are people meeting Jesus when they meet you? I love to see Jesus in the kindness of strangers! I’ve seen Him in teachers, nurses, doctors, bus drivers, even in a check-out line in the grocery store. He’s the person that let’s you go ahead. He greets you with a smile and conversation. It’s important for us to look for Jesus and to recognize His presence. It’s important for other people to see Jesus in us and in our church. It is often said that our lives may be the only Bible some people will ever read. Therefore, we introduce people to Jesus by the way we live.

Approximately 80% of people in America claim to be Christians, but the large majority of people in our society do not live by Christian standards. Living by Christian standards does not mean living a perfect life – no one is perfect. The Christian standard should always be lifted up, not lowered down. We shouldn’t look down on people from this standard either. Instead we should extend a hand and lift people up. You don’t have to be perfect for God to use you! You just have to be willing.

Jesus teaches his disciples how to live in a non-Christian world at the end of his Beatitudes in Mt. 5:13-16. He says they must be salt, to flavor the world, to impede the corruption of the world, and to heal the wounds of the world. In a similar metaphor He tells the disciples that they must be light to dispel the darkness of the world. When we live as salt and light in the world, we become witnesses by the way we live. Jesus says that when we do this, people will see our good deeds and praise our Father in Heaven.

In order for us to carry out the B.I.G. Mission, we must love others because we introduce people to Jesus by the way we live and by the way we love. We invite you to join us for this exciting series, and we look forward to meeting you!
